Local listing sites are showing dramatic growth. Traffic at Google Maps is up 25% year to year. Relative newcomer Yelp, founded in 2004, is up 129%.
This article goes into some details about the benefits (and pitfalls) of promoting your business with online reviews within the local search engines. Anyone else on board with this?

I am not sure whether there are some regular or large number of users using local search engine.

Keeping up with your reviews and learning what other people are saying is critical. After all, who uses the phone book anymore? Just do a search on a company or service and you know if it's online its going to show up.

People research what they are looking for. Like any other part of your business, you have to stay on top of what others are saying.

I think smart business owners are the ones who are catching on and getting online - they may not be ahead of the consumers but they'll at least have a chance of getting in on the conversation and taking a leadership role.

What is being said about you online should not come as a surprise if you can help it.

I need some advice on getting on to the first page of the Google local search. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I wonder the traffic of this compared to organic traffic. Thanks.

There are lots of people who are using local search engines. Their reviews are considered important for the site. The reviews give the proper guidance to the new visitors.

One of the things people focus too much on is their website. There are a of easier and faster ways to get onto Google's first page. I think your website is important but focusing on videos, directory profiles, and Google places are all faster and easier ways to get on Google's first page. Plus, all these will help build up your website ranking.

Google Adwords is of-course one of the most recommendable tool we can use. But more over participating in such important local citation sites would really help. Google plus offers a lot of opportunity to earn local rankings. We must learn how to manipulate it properly.

Good Reviews are important to local business, but more importantly is to make sure that you are not getting bad reviews. Bad news is more impactful on people than good news in general. There seems to be alot of online reputation management firms out there now, trying to help people get rid of any bad reviews.

Create relevant local content on your website. Link to it from relevant offsite locations. Entice others to link to your geo targeted content.

Rise to the top for local targeted keywords.
