Using apps for marketing works really well for specific types of companies. You either need to have a lot of name appeal to get people to use your app, or your app has to be amazing so people talk about it and use it because it's really fun/useful/etc. If you're in the middle of either of these groups, chances are you'll spend a moderate amount on creating the app, and you'll have a hard time getting it downloaded.
