Outside of opt-in lists, our customer service emails to our client base warrant about 80% open rate. Any bulk email campaign we have ever sent are usually 5-10%

a 10% response rate is actually very good for DM (compared to 2%-3% expected for bulk email). The only issue is cost of bulk email vs. cost of DM. What do you think is cheaper?

SEOMoz has a great tool but I don't know if its a pay or free. The best I have found is the Google keyword tool. Another option is to go to your competitors websites & look at their meta keywords :)

I wouldnt say dead, just not prominent. We use direct mail for after sales followup and to stay on top of customer service. Its great for that - pretty horrible for new customer acquisition.
