Directories

Hola

What is the general consenus about directories, do companies still list with those or is it a waste of time and money?

Years ago we would list on places like goguides.org but what does Google now think of these websites?

Any input woud be appreciated

Thanks
Nutty

There's really no telling what Google thinks of them. What's a lot more important is what YOU (and your potential customers) think about them.

Do YOU use these directories when you're looking for a business? If not, what makes you think your customers would use them? If you do use them and you know your prospects do, too, then it's probably useful to be listed in them, regardless of what Google "thinks."

You're not going to get penalized for having a few directory links (unless perhaps those are the only links you have). Google expects websites to have a certain percentage of "lower value" links as part of a natural link profile. The problems arise when all your links are low-quality.

On the other hand, they're probably not going to bring you much raw "SEO benefit" either. So unless you think they'll be a good source of referral traffic, I wouldn't bother if it were me.

Hi Torka

Thanks for your reply, yeah I am hesitating over these now because our customers do't have time to scroll through these directories (I will of course check my stats to be sure!)

I was wondering what Google thought of these now out of interest, and I wonder if many people are still using and if their customers use these now as well

Have a great day :)

Google will consider these directories if they are always preferred by the targeted users but now these are usually ignored due to lots of platforms that are most effectively providing the needs and expectations from the audience. :welcome2:

The importance of directories may be shifted to the new gen bookmarking sites, I think. Not shure.

Google doesn't consider directory websites as spam links. Still many of the good directories are running with tons of traffic.
Recently, I have been worked for a website and tested with the directory submission with other good contextual backlinks. Google doesn't kick me out for this.

Google loves when a link gets viewed and shared by people, no matter which platform it is!

Directory submission on high authority websites are still helpful for your website it plays a big role to get ranking better, But other side some directory sites with low DA, PA are play negative effect to your website. Be careful while making backlinks from Directory website.

Do proper analysis before using any directory sites...

My experience has been as follows:

Good directories cost money and often are not cheap.
Bad directories are often free of charge and completely useless.

What are you trying to achieve? If being high on search rankings is more important to your business, i.e you dont really have customer relations and operate in a market where the sales process is simpler, then perhaps a strongly authoritative directory with DoFollow links is recommended.
If its a no follow but from a well-established directory, You have to look at Analytics to determine wether the traffic from the directory is worth the money.

My opinion is that using online directories is a waste of time. I mean, the last time you needed to find something did you go to Google or to an online directory? (Wanna bet I already know the answer?)
Online directories are obsolete, they won`t help you better rank in Google, some of them might be viewed as link farms so they can even hurt your rankings.
Look at dmoz.com, it`s supposed to be one of the best directories out there, but you are 10 times better using Google than searching in it.
