Creating A Social Network

I am new to the forum and would like to ask advice regarding my doubts regarding building an internet enterprise. IŽd like to begin with 3 questions.

1 Is possible, me not being expert on computing, to join or associate to a friend expert on this field and while I register the domain and design the general ideas and purposes of the web, the other person develops the technical aspects?

2 In order to create a social network, where could I get the appropiate software for doing that?

3 In the field of webs like social networks, How do the owners get the benefits?

Thank you very much

Hi enterpriser, first off welcome aboard :standingw

Many may not have direct experiences to say. I think it is possible, but find the right partner for that sort of venture may be difficult as someone will really have to believe in your idea to invest a substantial amount of time programming something like that. An idea alone isn't probably enough, but other things will be necessary like promotion, business setup, operational, etc. So I'd personally expect someone to have more than an idea if I was creating/programming a new social network. Others might have a different response though.

Typically it would be programmed in a language such as php, java, etc using a database such as mysql. If you are looking for something off the shelf, you can find applications/software at I didn't check specifically for social networking, but if its out there typically you can find it there.

Owners typically benefit from a social network through advertising on the website. There are other tactics as well, such as private paid subscription areas.

thanks for your answer :)

It would be also valid not `creating` but using a existing specific software(of free use or bought by me)for designing a social network and use it for commercial purposes(adds, donatiosn etc)?

Hello there,

The rub is this;

What is it about your social network that is any different to any of the others that exist?

There is no reason you cannot hire a programmer or formulate a partnership with one, however you need to convince them that your idea is workable. Programmers are usually pretty smart people, and they tend to spend a lot more time on their computer than most people. So when you do contact them you would do well to listen to them.

Here are some things to keep in mind;
- The cost of developing most sites is small compared with the marketing
- Bespoke sites are expensive, depending on what you want they can cost you in the 50,000k and up for anything reasonably substantial and different to other sites.
- Off the shelf systems (if there is one that does what you need) will not allow you to differentiate from any of your other competitors.
- Without being able to differentiate, your profit margins are drastically reduced.
- If you could get an off the shelf system, there will be 100 other people making millions of dollars too, right? :)
- It takes 10 years to be a good programmer.
- Good programmers are smart, they want and deserve to be paid accordingly
- Bad programmers will blow your whole business, just like bad carpenters will ruin your house.
- There are lots of bad programmers around
- How do you find a good programmer?

I could go on, but those are some of the conundrums you will need to consider if you want to be sucessful.

Could you be more specific about your needs for a social network?

Hi enterpriser,

starting a business is mostly not about technical stuff. It's about a product that fits to the market.

I give you the advice not to start the business before you validated a demand for it. I think it is very difficult to setup yet another social network.
It will take you a lot of effort and money. But if your plan is to create a social network for special needs or for a niche it's worth to try.
BUT do a validation on the idea before by driving your targeted audience to a test site or different etst sites and check if they like it (e.g by signing up to a newsletter). maybe you can even sell a kind of product, to make your first dollar.
Some words about technical stuff. You can hire experts on Elance from all over the world. They program you a website for little money. Go always step by step and use the cheapest option, because there is a good chance that you business idea fails. Rather try different ideas. Combine ideas. Be open to changes. Learn. Learn Learn.
Best regards,

I like to think that innovation should be closely tied to the technology, so if you are not fully up to speed with the tech, get some knowledge so you can see where the gaps ion the market are.

About 2-3 years ago, I created a social network (community based website) with
It is hosted solution, so they handle all the technical things.
You pay for the plan and everything is ready to hit the road. :)
