One great way to use Google Alerts: use it on your brand name and your domain name. Then you'll get emails on exactly when a site mentions you. This is a great way to track your brand online.

i am running some blogs and after every update, i use to digg them so that they can be crawled by Google robot fast. I have noticed that it hardly takes a day if i do this.
