I've been looking for a comprehensive book / guide / web site about building LARGE online retail stores. I have already searched Amazon, but couldn’t find one. What I am specifically looking to learn is to build infrastructures of large retail stores like (Amazon, Shopping.com etc)
Any recommendations?

Andrew Chak's Submit Now: Designing Persuasive Web Sites is filled with some great ideas.
Here's an interview ith the author:

I'd also look at some usability and information architecture sites such as
http://www.uie.com
and this section of Boxes and Arrows:
http://www.boxesandarrows.com/categories/how_to_methods_approaches.php
Especially articles like the ones on "Lessons for Web Design from Mall and Retail Design "
Some excellent ideas on both sites. Organizing pages can be very beneficial to visitors, and search engines if done right.
