View Full Version : Dynamic Sites - Any Suggested Scripts/Programmes

I have a few sites (property, events, directories) that are manually updated. They could all really do being run by database and I don't have time to learn PHP. Any ideas on prewritten scripts that may be able to do this for me? I've looked at hotscripts, phpscripts and loads of other sites by searching on what I am looking for, but haven't found anything.

Also, I run a community web site, where local businesses and organisations can have a page. When we started there was a guy who was going to do some ASP programming so that the "members" could update their own pages. He left and left me with nothing to do this with. Any ideas on this? I have also searched extensively and found nothing. The users should only be able to access their own pages.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Ann! :standingw

I have a few sites (property, events, directories) that are manually updated.

A nice program if you want to set up a directory:

Links 2.0 (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/links/index.htm) - A simple "entry level" directory program.

Links SQL (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/links-sql/index.htm) - The advanced version. I use it and it is great.

Also, I run a community web site, where local businesses and organisations can have a page. When we started there was a guy who was going to do some ASP programming so that the "members" could update their own pages.

Something like that could easily be done using Movable Type (http://www.movabletype.org).

I know others will have some ideas as well.

I have recently become a big fan of Drupal. It takes a bit to figure out, but it is very configurable and quite powerful. I'm actually working on two drupal based sites right now. One of them will replace a site I had done with movable type.

Thanks, I will check these out.

I have started a site using PostNuke, which looks a bit like Drupal. It takes a lot of time to work out, but gives a lot features I wouldn't have the technical know how to do. It takes a bit to make sites generated this way search engine friendly, but it's possible. Is Drupal any better at SEO?

Thanks for the info. I am in the process of setting up a local directory. Talk about timing. :D

You might also try Blog:CMS which is a total solution. I have only just started looking at it.. but its a combined blog/forum etc method.

You don't mention what you mean by a page for each member. That could be done by MT/wordpress or any other blog application.

Hi Ann,

Amongst other things we do website development and were in a similar predicament in that we were having to do much of our development from scratch. What we have started using is a CMS (database driven website framework) that provides us with what we'd describe as the basics but still allows us to add specific functionality if and as required through coding.

The underlying database framework certainly allows for the sort of "user page" capability you mention - there is some sort of pre-built individual home page functionality but I think it's more for each unique user to customise their own look and feel (haven't needed to look as yet!) rather than what you refer to. It also appears to be a fair bit easier for our clients (and us) to work with compared to PostNuke. Now we just have to get our site over

The CMS is called Mambo - you can have a bit more of a look and play with it at: http://mamboserver.com/cat/Demo_Site/

Feel free to let me know what you think and if you need any work done - if I'm not mistaken the Aussie dollar is still a good bargain for the Irish pound or Euro!

Also if you - or any other readers - have any Mambo queries don't hesitate to ask.

Scott

It does look interesting. With the currency differences, it may be a real bargain. Welcome to the forum.
