View Full Version : Software sales via download
LPS 23rd August 2004, 12:36 PM Hope I'm putting this in the right section of the forum. Mods: feel free to move this thread if needed. :)
I'm trying to figure out how to sell some software I've written. I have plenty of resources for doing this if I want to set things up so I have to mail CD's to people.
The problem is, I'd like to be able to run the store, and yet still take a vacation without having to hire/contract someone to handle the shipping.
So the obvious thing would be to arrange for people to buy it online and download the software (which makes sense since it is only 500k in size).
I have access to the Agora shopping cart through my web host, but I'm not finding any feature that allows a person to do anything other than ship a physical product.
Does anyone here have suggestions on how I could hook up with a company that provides a pay/download system?
Thanks.
Robert 23rd August 2004, 03:48 PM I can highly recommend esellerate - http://www.esellerate.net/
Their system is specifically designed for software sales and the features in that area are fantastic. I'd list the features but their are too many and it's best just to have you visit their site.
I used them for a non-software application and was very pleased with their service.
I know of another site that used them to sell eBooks with great results also.
jmjj215 23rd August 2004, 06:20 PM If you're using PayPal at all, http://www.payloadz.com is very easy to set up and use. They don't charge you anything if your revenue is under $250 a month, and I think $15 once it exceeds that. The prices go up as your revenue increases. If you're like me, it's free :) (hopefully it won't be soon). It interfaces with PayPal seamlessly and gives the customer instant access to download and a link through email for 48 hours, then the link expires.

LPS 24th August 2004, 02:33 PM Excellent. Thank you for the links! :)
I like payloadz, but I'm not sure I want to limit my customer base to just people with Paypal accounts. The last person I spoke with regarding that said something about having to pay to open a Paypal account
Not sure about that one, I'm still looking into that, doesn't sound right.
If Paypal is still free for people to pay for product, then I will definitely go with that, because I already have my account set up (heh.. back when I signed up, they were giving you $5.00 just for doing so).
Again, Thanks. :)

PayPal recently changed their policy about this. I was worried about the same thing. Now, they offer people who don't have PayPal accounts the opportunity to pay with their credit cards.
Of course, it is a bit simpler and more streamlined for those with PayPal accounts, but the credit card processing works out just fine.
Hope this helps.
hscpub 11th October 2004, 05:55 PM This is helpful to us also as we sell CD informational products and want to start selling by download also. Thanks. Alex Hammer, Publisher, HSC Publications
Chris 11th October 2004, 06:33 PM There is also a company called softsell i believe who also specialize in software sales download.

PayPal offers a customer the opportunity to pay using a credit card up to $2,000. That's $2,000 total, not on one purchase. Once the client has charged $2,000 (on any combined number of products) they must then sign up for a true PayPal account. So, if I, as the customer, used PayPal and paid with my credit card for a $100 item at one site, $300 at another site, $50 for something else, etc. Once I hit $2,000, PayPal wouldn't let me use that credit card anymore. I'd have to then sign up for a "real" PayPal account or use a different credit card :)
There is no cost for getting a PayPal account, but they do have to provide bank account information.
Then there's always ClickBank. It's more expensive than some others, but it's really easy to setup, the intitial fee is only $50, and they handle ALL the aspects of your affiliate program (including sign ups, tracking, payments, etc.) if you choose to have one.
