View Full Version : Firefox Plugins and Extensions
Robert 6th May 2005, 12:15 PM I'm having fun playing with Firefox. :D
What are your favorite extensions or plugins?
Mine so far:
Paste and Go
Let's you paste a URL into the address bar and immediately go to the page without hitting enter.
Mouse Gestures
Allows you to execute commands using mouse gestures. For example, hold the right mouse button down and move it a bit to the left to go back a page. Hold the right mouse button down and move it a bit to the right to go forward a page.
I'm still trying to get Smiley Xtra and Spellbound to work. No luck yet.
gilmorejay 6th May 2005, 09:48 PM Hey Robert,
You mentioned:

I am not sure why you are having trouble with spellbound. I downloaded it today from http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/install. If you have the latest version of FF you will have no problem. If Firefox warns you of extension installs make sure that you allow. In addition, you must download one of the dictionaries. If you don't, Spellbound will not work. As always, restart Firefox before trying to use a new extension. Once it is installed just select the text and right click on it and select "Check Spelling".
I mentioned Chris Pederick's Web Developer Toolbar (http://chrispederick.com/work/firefox/webdeveloper/)in another thread. It is an integrated toolbar that enables you to check and edit css files, validate both remote and local files and much more.
Other favourites, I love Sage (http://sage.mozdev.org/) which is described as "Sage is a lightweight RSS and Atom feed aggregator extension for Mozilla Firefox. It's got a lot of what you need and not much of what you don't."
I have used several of the online feed readers but having an interface for Firefox is very cool. I like it much more than using Thunderbird.
My other faves are Dictionary Search (http://dictionarysearch.mozdev.org/) and the RSS Editor (http://rsseditor.mozdev.org/).
Dictionary Search is great because it allows you to right click to look up a word in the dict.org databases or any other dictionary db that you want to set up. RSS editor is a perfect way to simplify blog updates. There is no need to go to your blog and login every time you want to update your page. Set up the RSS editor for one or more of your blogs and edit and publish on the fly.
Good luck to all.

Robert 13th May 2005, 09:51 AM you must download one of the dictionaries.
Ah, I didn't do that the first time I downloaded Spellbound. I also found that the first time I used it (after downloading the dictionary), I had to specify the language when the "Check Spelling" box first appeared. Thanks Jay!
I've found another that I really like: ViewSourceWith (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=394)
This extension allows you to use an external editor to view the source code of a page.
StupidScript 20th May 2005, 07:30 PM I have several favorites, and a favorite version of FF:
My favorite version of FireFox is the Stipe-optimized version (http://pryan.org/mozilla/firefox), currently at v1.0.4. Quickquickquick like a Fox!
My favorite extensions are:
Browsing: "Flashblock" and its sister "Objection" for helping with Flash movies and sneaky stuff, "ieView" for those sites that insist on MSIE-only, "infoRSS" for a feed crawl in the status bar, and "ImageZoom" for ... I'll let you guess. ;)
Utility and Fun: "Google PageRank Status" show the PR of the current page, "U.S. Homeland Security Threat Level" shows the colored icon (always 'Elevated' :( ), and "Bork" which you've just got to try to believe. ROFL! "Bork" is also great for use with the Moz Thunderbird email client ... particularly for reading junk mail.
I do abuse "ViewSourceWith", as well, Robert.
<edit>The Windows (all architectures) installer for FF-with-StipeSpeed is here (http://pryan.org/mozilla/firefox/stipe/firefox-104-s8v12-install.exe).</edit>
Robert 20th May 2005, 07:57 PM Thank you James! Lots of new goodies for me to check out this weekend. :abovehead
StupidScript 26th May 2005, 07:56 PM I wanted to add that I was away from these forums for a few months, simply because it slipped off my radar a little as other activities progressed.
When I installed the infoRSS extension, one of the first things I did was add the RSS feed from this site to my list.
I returned to SmallBusinessBrief.com in no small part because of that feed, and it's "in-my-face" presence. I'm surely glad that I did! Still one of the most useful forums on the web.
JoJoJam 7th September 2005, 01:59 PM I apologize for bumping up an old thread, but I also wanted to add that I LOVE firefox. It makes working on the internet so much easier and faster. I love the copy link function without going up to the url bar to highlight the text and copy it.
I also like the ability to open multiple links in different tabs at once...basically, I love it all...
Auto copy is great as well!!
freelancemom 10th September 2005, 11:23 AM Oh... SEOpen (http://seopen.com/firefox-extension/index.php) totally rocks! You've got to get that little add-on
Another one that I absolutely love is the little adsense counter (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&category=Blogging&numpg=10&id=500).
fairdoes 19th October 2005, 07:07 AM Add Adblock and NoScript if you like security. ForecastFox does an accurate weather forecast for my 'town' which is really little more than a village! It's good.
The latest SearchStatus has a bug and wrecks FF, but Pagerank is fine. :)

I got this SearchStatus thing today which is nice because it shows the Alexa rating of a site. Sits nice and neat at the bottom of your browser. Also shows goog PR which doesn't really matter much now that firefox supports the google toolbar.

fairdoes 20th October 2005, 03:27 AM Thanks for the adsense counter link, freelancemom. It saves a few minutes every day, and sometimes has good news :o
I'm also a fan of SEOpen, especially the masscheck / domainlinks. I wish google supported this search... :)

I have one question about searchstatus: does it count hits on Alexa like their toolbar (and improves site’s rank on Alexa) or just shows Alexa's rank?
St0n3y 14th August 2006, 10:43 AM I was just re-installing this and read that it actually does report back to Alexa. So your information is being transferred.
